About us
The Workers’ Cause Party (PCO) was founded during the Brazilian military dictatorship, standing firm for workers’ rights and democratic freedoms. Our party played a significant role in establishing influential organizations like the Workers’ Party (PT) and the Unified Workers’ Central (CUT), until we were expelled after the 1989 election due to PT’s alliance policies, which we opposed on principle. Proudly a communist party, we focus on representing and mobilizing workers, students, and activists in universities, labor unions, and other grassroots movements across Brazil.
Throughout our history, we have consistently fought against imperialist attacks, from combating the 2016 coup against Dilma Rousseff – which was orchestrated by the United States – to fighting Lula’s imprisonment and leading calls against Bolsonaro’s authoritarian government. Our commitment to the workers’ cause knows no borders: we stand in solidarity with international movements against imperialism, supporting the struggles for sovereignty in Venezuela, Cuba, and Palestine.
In 2022, with the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, we sent two correspondents to Donbas to unmask the lies told by imperialist media against Russia. We have defended the Russian people and the right of Russia to combat imperialist aggression since day one.
In Palestine, we have also stood alongside Hamas and the Palestinian resistance since October 7th 2023. Back then, Rui Costa Pimenta, PCO’s president, announced that the party was “1,000% with Hamas”. In February 2024, we sent a delegation, led by Rui Pimenta, to Qatar. There, we met with Hamas’ political bureau, including with the martyr Ismail Haniyeh.
From this encounter, we wrote and published a book to combat all the lies told by Zionists, called Hamas Tells Its Side of History (O Hamas conta seu lado da história). The book contains exclusive interviews with Hamas’ top leaders and documents from the Palestinian organization. It also compiles various articles from independent media telling the truth about what happened in October 7th 2023.
Bellow, you can read our position about a number of topics:
Public Debt
We denounce Brazil’s public debt as a mechanism of imperialist exploitation, transferring substantial portions of the national budget— almost 80% in 2023—to foreign investors and financial elites. This siphons resources away from critical national development, keeping Brazil economically dependent and undermining national sovereignty. We call for the complete cancellation of this exploitative debt.
Anti-Imperialism
Imperialism, the highest and most aggressive stage of capitalism, must be actively opposed as it imposes severe economic and social control over less-developed nations. We stand in solidarity with all anti-imperialist movements and advocate for policies that weaken imperialist power, fostering conditions for revolutionary change toward socialism.
Freedom of Speech
Freedom of speech is a fundamental democratic right that underpins all other freedoms. Recent calls to limit speech under various pretexts threaten to erode the rights of workers and oppressed groups. We defend absolute freedom of expression and reject any form of censorship as a tool of imperialist and bourgeois control.
National Sovereignty
The PCO defends Brazil’s national sovereignty, opposing any foreign control over the country’s natural resources or interference in its development. We demand the expulsion of foreign military bases, the prohibition of imperialist NGOs, and the end of foreign exploitation in key industries, such as oil and mining. Brazil’s resources belong to the Brazilian people, particularly the working class.
On "Terrorism"
We challenge the imperialist concept of “terrorism,” often used to criminalize resistance by oppressed peoples. While we don’t endorse terrorism as a method, we oppose its use as a justification to repress legitimate struggles, as seen in the case of Palestinian resistance against “Israel’s” violence. We stand with all peoples defending themselves against imperialist aggression.
